For years, researchers have known that healthy lifestyles are a function of more than individual choices. Neighborhood and other factors impact health outcomes. National surveys, while good tools for understanding health risk factors of disease and health care utilization, do not often have a large enough sample for gauging the health of populations in individual cities. The Health of Houston Survey 2010 (HHS2010) is designed to fill that gap and provide researchers, health agencies, service providers, and community organizations ways to understand neighborhood and community risk factors for disease in Houston and Harris County. Linder and Reynolds will provide an overview of this survey and how researchers and community organizations can access and use the Public Use Data File (PUDF).

The Health of Houston Survey is the area's most extensive survey of health behaviors, health care utilization, and social, economic, and neighborhood risk factors. The HHS2010 is a population-based health survey of more than 5,000 respondents in Hairris County and City of Houston households. Two web-based platforms (www.hhs2010.net) provide online public access to the 180+ variables aggregated for the region or for sub-county areas.
